Dremel Rotary Tool

My dremel rotary tool is one of my most used tools on my workbench, next to my hammer and philips #2 screw driver.  Dremel has put out numerous versions of their high speed rotary tool over the years.

My first one came when I was a teenager building a model railroad.  I can think of no better tool for all the versatile needs for precision hobby needs.  Most dremal rotary tools have variable high speed motors, which start smoothly and can adjust speeds quickly. One thing you will notice is that the dremel units are well-balanced and fit comfortably in your hand. While I used mine for hobbies as a teenager, it has helped me with many other things since.  It is a long lasting, versatile tool.

Almost all new dremel moto tools come with a variety of accessories to help you sand, cut, drill, grind, polish, buff, engrave, and more… all as high speed tools. Keep in mind, you will want to review your owner’s manual because it contains all the recommended speeds for using your dremel on various materials. The manual will save your butt because using some tools at improper speeds will burn, cut or damage your material.

Cordless Dremel Tool

Dremel Rotary Tools come in corded or cordless models. The cordless are becoming more popular because of their newer lithium batteries. Many early users of cordless dremels were not thrilled with the short battery life. The new lithium batteries changed all that. Some of the newer models have a battery fuel gauge, which is a very cool new feature. Another nice thing about the new lithium batteries is that if you store your dremel on its charger, you aren’t going to shorten batter capacity due to memory loss.

I have used both the corded and the cordless dremel rotary tools. I highly recommend the cordless. I remember working on my model train layout and having the cord drag across my layout, knocking things over. Last year I was helping my son with his Pinewood Derby car (which is great with your dremel). I bought a new cordless. It was SO much easier to move around, go from one project to the next, and still do precision work. He finished second in his whole pack, thanks in large part to the efficiency of using a high speed dremel rotary tool.

It is not very common to find users who aren’t happy with their Dremel. Just go to Amazon and begin going through the reviews. A few that I would recommend if you are in the market to buy one is the Dremel 7700-1/15 MultiPro 7.2-Volt Cordless Rotary Tool (the one shown in the picture above at Amazon), the Dremel 8000-03 10.8-Volt Lithium Ion Cordless Rotary Tool, or the Dremel 300-1/24 300 Series Variable Speed Rotary Tool.

Like I mentioned, all of these come as a kit, so you are going to get plenty of accessories. You may want to buy another accessory or two if you have special needs beyond what is in your Dremel rotary tool kit. And, once you learn how to use it, you will also learn there are many other attachments that you can use with it that for even more uses. You can explore some of those uses on the link at the top of the page.
